Strengthening Public Witness: WSCF Asia-Pacific Continues Movement Building with GMKI Indonesia

Share to :

As part of its ongoing Movement Building initiative, WSCF Asia-Pacific continues to accompany Student Christian Movements across the region through dialogue, mutual learning, and regional solidarity. These conversations provide opportunities to strengthen leadership, celebrate local initiatives, and explore how student movements faithfully respond to the realities of their societies.

Program Secretary and Movement Building Coordinator Anastasia Hilda, recently met with representatives of Gerakan Mahasiswa Kristen Indonesia (GMKI), including Jessica (General Secretary) and Bima (Functional Secretary – International Relations). The meeting served as an opportunity to exchange updates on GMKI’s ministry, organizational development, and future collaboration within the WSCF fellowship.

Founded in 1950, GMKI continues to serve students through its nationwide network of 115 local branches, guided by its longstanding commitment to faith, knowledge, and service. Throughout the conversation, GMKI shared how these values continue to shape its ministry by connecting Christian witness with leadership development, public engagement, and advocacy for justice.

One of the movement’s recent highlights was the Indigenous Peoples’ Bill Seminar, organized in partnership with WSCF Asia-Pacific. The seminar created space for critical dialogue on Indigenous rights, land justice, and legal recognition, reaffirming GMKI’s commitment to standing alongside marginalized communities. This commitment is further reflected in the work of its Legal Aid and Advocacy Center (PBH GMKI), which provides legal consultation, human rights advocacy, and public legal education while accompanying communities affected by land conflicts, environmental issues, and challenges to freedom of religion and belief.

Beyond advocacy, GMKI continues to invest in educational empowerment. Through scholarship partnerships with several Christian universities, the movement has supported more than 500 students, offering opportunities from undergraduate to doctoral studies. Language development programs in English and Mandarin further strengthen members’ capacity for leadership and international engagement, reflecting GMKI’s vision of preparing students to participate confidently in both national and global ecumenical spaces.

The meeting also highlighted GMKI’s ongoing process of organizational renewal. Following the successful resolution of previous leadership challenges, the movement is strengthening its internal structures, developing a curriculum for new members, and establishing an independent alumni network to ensure long-term sustainability while maintaining organizational independence. Participants also reflected on common challenges faced by student movements today, including declining youth participation in organizations and language barriers that can limit regional engagement.

The conversation concluded with a shared commitment to deepen collaboration between GMKI and WSCF Asia-Pacific through leadership formation, regional participation, and continued exchange among Student Christian Movements across the Asia-Pacific region. Both organizations reaffirmed the importance of accompanying young people as they grow in faith while responding courageously to the social realities around them.

Through Movement Building, WSCF Asia-Pacific continues to accompany Student Christian Movements as they strengthen leadership, deepen public witness, and live out their commitment to faith, justice, and service within their local communities and beyond.
