The Student Christian Movement (SCM) Timor-Leste continues to show encouraging signs of growth and renewal through a series of activities focused on faith formation, leadership development, and community-building among students and senior friends. Over the past few weeks, members have gathered regularly to study Scripture, reflect on contemporary challenges, develop personal leadership capacities, and strengthen the movement’s long-term sustainability.
The journey began on 12 May 2026, when SCM Timor-Leste launched the regular Bible Study gathering at the IPTL Synod Hall. Students, senior friends, and new members from various universities came together to deepen their understanding of Scripture and explore its relevance to daily life. The session was facilitated by Rev. Levi Vas Conselos, who led participants in reflecting on the theme “Living in the Righteous Way and Submitting to God’s Authority” based on Psalms 1:1–6 and 2:1–12.
Through a careful reading of the biblical text, participants reflected on the contrast between the way of righteousness and the way that leads away from God’s purposes. The discussion invited students to consider how faithfulness, integrity, and trust in God’s guidance remain essential amid the many social, academic, and personal challenges they encounter. The Bible Study also provided a valuable space for dialogue, mutual learning, and spiritual encouragement among participants from different educational backgrounds.
SCM Timor-Leste continued the commitment to regular faith formation with another Bible Study gathering on 20 May 2026, a significant date marking the Independence Day of Timor-Leste. Once again led by Rev. Levi Vas Conselos, the gathering became an opportunity not only for biblical reflection but also for collective discernment on the relationship between faith and nationhood.
As participants commemorated the nation’s independence, discussions explored themes of freedom, justice, peace, and hope. Students reflected on the meaning of liberation in both personal and societal dimensions, considering how Christian faith calls individuals and communities to participate in the ongoing work of building a just, peaceful, and inclusive society. The gathering encouraged participants to connect the historical struggles of Timor-Leste with contemporary challenges and to envision how young Christians can contribute meaningfully to the future of their nation.
Beyond Bible Study, SCM Timor-Leste also invested in leadership and personal development through a workshop held on 28 May 2026 entitled “Life Transformation Through Mindset and Personal Growth.” The workshop was facilitated by Leonardo Gamboa Marcal, who previously studied Peace SOP in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, Thailand, and is currently engaged in Civil Engineering in Dili, Timor-Leste.
The workshop focused on the importance of personal transformation, self-awareness, and the development of positive mindsets for leadership and social engagement. Participants were encouraged to reflect critically on their aspirations, values, and responsibilities as young people living in a rapidly changing world. Through interactive discussions and practical insights, the session highlighted how personal growth is closely connected to community leadership and social transformation. Participants were challenged to cultivate resilience, vision, and a commitment to lifelong learning as they prepare to contribute to their communities and society.
Alongside these educational and spiritual activities, SCM Timor-Leste also convened a meeting with Senior Friends to discuss the future direction of the movement. The conversation focused on strengthening organizational sustainability, fostering intergenerational collaboration, and ensuring that SCM Timor-Leste continues to provide meaningful spaces for student witness and leadership formation. The meeting reflected a shared commitment among both younger and older generations to nurture the movement’s growth and to support emerging student leaders.
These recent developments are particularly encouraging as they demonstrate the renewed momentum of SCM Timor-Leste. The regular rhythm of Bible Study, the investment in leadership formation, and the intentional conversations about the movement’s future all point to a growing commitment to holistic student ministry. They remind us that student movements flourish when they create spaces where faith, critical reflection, fellowship, and action are held together.
As SCM Timor-Leste continues this journey, there is hope that the movement will further strengthen its witness among students and young people throughout the country. Through its commitment to nurturing faith, encouraging critical thinking, fostering leadership, and building communities of solidarity, SCM Timor-Leste continues to embody the vision of a student movement that seeks to serve both the church and society.
May this renewed season of growth inspire even more students to participate actively in the life of the movement and contribute to the ongoing work of justice, peace, reconciliation, and hope in Timor-Leste and beyond.
